About This Quote

In the book To Mock a Killing Bird by Sherman Alexie, a young man named Buck is a peripheral character in a story about a family falling apart. He struggles to find his place in the world and to figure out his role in this family. The story is told from the perspective of two characters: a young girl named Julee and her father, Cal. In one scene, Julee accidentally breaks an object that her father has been working on.

In an attempt to fix it, she steps on it with her foot and breaks it even further. Her father tells her that he will have to go into town to pick up another part so he can repair it. Then she begins to cry.

As she cries, a doodle appears on the bottom half of the page in which a tiny man gives the middle finger to a giant, angry eagle with razor-sharp talons. Beneath it, the caption: To Mock a Killing Bird.
